Now Working from Home?

It sounds like the stuff of James Bond movies, but there is a genuine chance that your home, for a number of different reasons, could be being bugged. A disgruntled ex-partner, a competitive business person, perhaps a journalist or activist – whatever the motivation, there are ways to prevent people from listening in to your conversations.

So, if you are facing targeted security threats, you need to check the physical spaces you occupy for hidden microphones and any other eavesdropping device that someone may have planted.

You’d be amazed at how inventive people can be when hiding technical surveillance equipment, including cars, sunbeds, and bathrooms – nothing is sacred. Listening devices are really easy to obtain with numerous on-line sources. So it is just as easy to place them in your home as all they need strategically is a power source (battery), in some cases the insertion of a sim card, and hey presto.

The process can be started by getting rid of any possible bugs by arming yourself with Shearwater’s anti-bug devices, which are sophisticated and extremely successful.

Get the Bug

Sweeping the room you suspect may be bugged is relatively straight-forward if you follow these simple procedures before calling in the experts if you feel a more advanced sweep is required…

When you look for a bug, look around for anything that seems out of places such as furniture or a picture. Have a look at what listening devices are on offer to see what kind of bugging devices are on the marketplace for size and shape so you’ll have an idea as to what you’re looking for. Another good device to check is your router – usually, bugs that need internet connection are going to access the web, and the Wi-Fi in your home.

Some bugs may run on batteries, but these will obviously have a limited lifespan, but persistent surveillance will require a more consistent power source. Follow visible wires, look for wires in walls, check outlets and extension cords. Once you’ve completed your house physical check, you can also check your clothes and bags for GPS-tracking bugs in this way as well. So, if someone has gone to all the effort of bugging your home and you suspect someone has bugged one if not more of your rooms, there are a lot of anti-bugging devices you could use to ensure your conversations remain private. Alas, we now live in a very tech-saturated world and the detection of clandestine devices is a specialist job. There is no quick fix for the non-trained amateur to be effective and to avoid false positives.

After the physical search, call in a professional.
