The importance of the Antenna cannot be overstated. This is the ear of the RF system. No amount of signal processing can analyse a signal not captured in the first instance. The WB range of antennas are produced in a number of forms, see below versions for laboratory or field use.


Audio – the most neglected area of many sweep teams, in spite of the fact that the wired mic is the first choice for professional attack teams.


Bloodhound is an ASMD, Acoustically Stimulated Microphone Detector which is an electronic system for use by Technical Security Inspection Teams for detecting audio eaves-dropping. The system works by detecting the radiated field created whenever a microphone detects sound. The Bloodhound operator can either listen to the detected audio or establish acoustic feedback.

Hunter XD is a Near Field RF detector. It operates on a difference in signal level across two H field antennas thus distinguishing between a high power distant transmission as with a TV channel, and a near by low level transmission as with a radio microphone (bug). This antenna array also provides direction finding (DF). With a bandwidth of 10 MHz to 10 GHz, Hunter XD also has a switchable 2.4 – 2.5 GHz 20db attenuator to aid overall signal detection in a strong WiFi environment. Control is with an AMOLED touch screen, thumb joy stick and read out from a high visibility head up LED display. Monitoring is with cordless headphones.


The RF Near Field Component

Developed by Shearwater TSCM for counter electronic surveillance, the primary requirement was to produce an

instrument for covertly detecting clandestine Radio Microphones, and that could be effectively used by both non

experienced and experienced counter measures personnel. It’s performance also had to be independent of the local

RF environment, a domain where many previous instruments have failed.

The result is Hunter which is a differential broad band “H” field detection system with a specification as follows:

  • 10 MHz – 10 GHz & beyond
  • Detection capabilities : All types of Radio Microphone including “Smart” bugs, such as frequency hopping and spread spectrum.

  • Audible Warning : SONAR or Listen (demodulation) modes, via closed back head phones.

  • Visual Warning : Field strength with  direction finding read out.

  • Physical : Hand held with antenna system mounted on a telescopic boom. The antenna head is detachable for easy storage in custom foam lined case. Supplied with high quality closed back head phones.

Some TSCM tasks cover a small area, possibly just a few rooms. We have therefore developed an ‘intermediate’ field equipment – Merlin. This unit’s capability sits between the far field and the near field technology and is also battery powered. It offers rapid deployment and is highly portable.

Merlin has rapid deployment spectrum analysis, with additional Spectrum Analyser functions. It can readily identify clandestine transmissions including SMART Spread Spectrum devices, and display video transmissions, ‘picture in picture’ display.


SearchLight provides a cost effective method to speed up comprehensive sweeps for the most rapidly emerging GSM based eavesdropping devices. GSM devices have replaced traditional RF device types as the most common threat and this trend will only increase as GSM technology and bandwidthsimprove.

The handheld WAM-108t is designed to detect and locate transmissions from all types of Radio Frequency devices. It contains an unprecedented eight separate RF detectors operating simultaneously to give complete RF coverage: 1 x 0-14 GHz Wideband, 5 x Cellular 2G/3G/4G and 2 x Wifi/Bluetooth 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

The CAM-105w Cellular Activity Monitor is a handheld multiband cellular signal detector ready for the latest generation of 4G devices (as well as existing 2G and 3G), plus Wifi/Bluetooth devices. It offers unprecedented levels of detection in a handheld unit and logs all cellular activity within range. The CAM-105w will detect signals from existing 900 MHz (2G), 1800 MHz (2G/4G), 2100 MHz (3G), plus the new 4G Cellular bands 800 MHz (4G LTE) and 2600 MHz (4G LTE). Multiple high gain amplifiers ensure detection up to 50 meters depending on signal strength and ambient conditions.
